Back in October I participated in a two day hackathon, 25K Find a New Way: CA GreenGov Challenge, put on by the California Department of General Services. The objective of the contest stated:
Drawing at least one data set available through the pilot Statewide Open Data Portal, this innovation contest will focus on creating apps, visualizations, and other tools that can help improve government sustainability practices. Contestants should be able to harness and visualize data sets to empower citizens and policymakers with data to evaluate the progress of each department toward established sustainability goals that will lead to better informed policy and implementation decisions.
The project that I created was an interactive dashboard to explore building sustainability metrics to make it easier to visually identify departments, ZIP codes, building types, & individual buildings that need the most attention to lower site energy use, grid-purchased electricity use, & water use. Several of the dashboard elements that I included I created in D3.js. But with the limited time constraints of one weekend, I was only able to develop prototype versions of these and they don’t feel developed enough to share more widely.
Other aspects of the dashboard though included color-coded maps of all buildings in the dataset; one map for Site Energy Use, one for Grid-purchased Electricity Use, and one for Water Use. These I created using the online tool CartoDB. Since these are actually fairly functional, I thought I’d publish these more widely in case they might be of use to the general public.
State of California Building 2014 Water Use (kgal)
Water Use is the annual amount of all the water a property consumes, as reported as coming from utility bills, as entered by property owner into Energy Star Portfolio Manager. Water use is measured in thousand gallons.
State of California Building 2014 Site Energy Use (kBtu)
Site Energy is the annual amount of all the energy a property consumes onsite, as reported on utility bills, as entered by property owner into Energy Star Portfolio Manager. Site energy combines all energy sources including: electricity, natural gas, and propane. Site energy is measured in kBtus.
State of California Building 2014 Grid Electricity Use (kWh)
Electricity Use – Grid Purchase is the annual amount of all the electricity a property consumes, as reported as coming from utility bills, as entered by property owner or utility provider into Energy Star Portfolio Manager. Electricity use – grid purchase is measured in kWh.
About the Data: State Buildings Sustainability Metrics (2014)
This data set lists sustainability metric data for state-owned buildings. These data are used to track state departments’ progress toward the goals mandated in Executive Order B-18-12. The metrics tracked in this set are total water use, total energy use, renewable energy generation and LEED certifications. The data set also includes building information for the 1722 buildings listed including, building name, address, total square footage and use type. These data are entered by property owners from each state department into the database Energy Star Portfolio Manager. Most data are obtained by property owner using the utility bill; however, some of the information is automatically fed into the database by the utility company.
