With summer in full swing and multiple consecutive days of 100+ degree temperatures I wanted to get a better idea of the history of high temperatures in Sacramento. Line charts are commonly used to show the rise in temperatures over the last century, but I wanted to see the daily high temperatures, low temperatures, and precipitation over the last 100 years or more represented in heat maps using D3.js.
The National Climatic Data Center is a great source for finding weather data. I selected the data set for the Sacramento Executive Airport which has 123+ years of weather data available. I’m still developing and refining this but it’s far enough along to share. Check it out.
