The Advanced Maui Optical and Space Surveillance Technologies (AMOS) Conference is the premier technical conference in the nation devoted to space surveillance. The AMOS Conference is a program of the Maui Economic Development Board, Inc. (MEDB), a nonprofit corporation established in 1982 to focus on diversifying Maui’s economy.

I’ve been working with the AMOS conference since 2006. Most of this is primarily back-end database functionality to support conference registration, and submission of technical papers for the conference but we also come up with a new look to kick off each new year. This year we decided to use WordPress for the front-end, public portion of the website, thereby enabling the AMOS staff to make updates to the pages themselves and to also blog about news and activities related to the conference.

Like many of my recent WordPress projects, the main effort of this project was to develop a custom WordPress theme working closely with the AMOS staff. Once again, the starting point of the custom theme was the default Twenty Ten WordPress theme. Key customizations for this theme include a custom home page with a featured content slider, customization of several WordPress templates, including individual page, post and category templates and plugin customizations.
